FACADES

Street style photography may seem like a somewhat recent attraction, but it isn't as new a phenomenon as some may think.  Before The Sartorialist there was Bill, who began shooting what he saw on the streets long before it was how many people spend their afternoons.  From 1968 to 1976, Bill Cunningham collected 500 period pieces and photographed women in more than 1,800 New York locations.

The result is now the subject of a new exhibition entitled 'Facades', on display at the New-York Historical Society until June 15th. From the Guggenheim to Central Park to the subway, Cunningham transports the viewer back to a simpler time, but no less stylish it seems.  Each woman, in her ornate ensemble with an iconic New York setting as her backdrop, is definitely a picture to be seen.
