Illustration is possibly one of my favorite art forms, and its one that we don't see too much of anymore. From the 1920's through the 1960's, artists such as Rene Gruau, Carl Erickson, Christian Berard and Rene Bouche created unbelievable works of art for publications, advertising campaigns and design houses. Vogue, Elle and Harper's Bazaar frequently used their work to display the latest collections or just to create something beautiful and au courant for their covers.
When I stumbled upon the work of Bil Donovan, it reminded me of these great artists and their innate sense of color and movement. Donovan captured moments at Thom Browne, Calla and Delpozo for New York Magazine's blog The Cut, and the results are captivating. The colors, the mood it creates, it's like I'm discovering the thrill of fashion illustration all over again. These I could see framed on my wall, right next to Gruau.
