Yesterday marked the 80th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition. I can't imagine the celebrating that must have taken place when this was announced, but I suspect it looked something like this. In 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the legalization of alcohol, both selling and consumption, and became a very popular man in the process.
Speakeasies were pretty commonplace and had been popping up across the country, but finding access to alcohol wasn't an easy feat. "Prohibition was a time when there tended to be a lot of excitement," recalls Diana Vreeland. "It was because you weren’t allowed to drink that you drank anything you could get your hands on. People would go into the bathroom and drink Listerine! Anything that might have a crrrumb of alcohol."
Now that it's the weekend (and we're in full-on holiday mode) go enjoy a glass or two. And if you're needing some inspiration as to where the best spirits may be, check out Vogue's list, compiled of designers, chefs and some Vogue editors, of their favorite haunts around the city. Tis the season.
